We are seeking both long and short-term volunteers to join us at our school project that we are running, working with children aged 5 – 12. We do NOT believe in charging our volunteers to work with us. Our only requirements are a minimum stay of three months, an intermediate level of Spanish, and a true desire to make a difference.
What do the volunteers do?
Right now our main project is running our cultural centre, however we are extremely keen to expand this in the future towards helping other members of the community. The centre is located just outside Santa Marta, in the neighbourhood Valle de Gaira. The centre is accessible by bus and taxi, at a small cost. The centre has one class in the morning, and another in the afternoon, both classes last two hours. The school is open from Monday to Friday, however we are very flexible and volunteers can decide how much time they would like to spend per week with the centre. Most volunteers work at least 3 days a week, which means that the kids can fully get to know you, and you can get to know their abilities and personalities. While we put emphasis on the fact that you can decide how often you would like to work, we need you to commit to the days that you give us, so as we can ensure that we have consistent, steady classes for our kids.
Our centre is split up into three groups based on age and ability. There is a class for younger children aged between 5-6 which focuses on familiarisation of the alphabet, numbers, colours and sensory motor skills, such as ripping paper, cutting and sticking. There is also a class for older children between 7-13 involving classes of English, social sciences, geography and Spanish. The last class is our literacy programme, designed for older children who can't read or write even the alphabet.
What you will do as a volunteer depends on your level of Spanish and length of stay. Typically, volunteers teach the class and have a relative amount of responsibility, however if a volunteer feels like this is not something that they would feel comfortable with there is the possibility to be an assistant in a class, however this is dependent on how many volunteers we have.
While most of our work goes on inside a classroom, every Friday we have a sports day which involves football and other outdoor sports which the children love, so if you have any other similar projects that you would like to look into doing with us please let us know!
